The electoral wins and take over of power by extreme right wing parties in the Netherlands has led to the official proclaiment of an “asylum-crisis”. This so-called crisis has been the result of more than two decades long normalization of racism towards muslims and migrants by structurally scapegoating minorities for economic issues stemming from budget cuts. Currently, people are criminalized through passport apartheid policies that exclude undocumented migrants and refugees from equal and fair access to housing, work, healthcare, education or social care by illegalizing them from society. The militarisation and increased fortification of European borders has over the past decades killed more than 50.000 thousands refugees in the mediterranean sea, making Europe’s borders the most deadly in the world.
This series aims to understand the current “asylum crisis” as a colonial crisis that continues to drive global inequality and continues to destroy people’s living environment through climate destruction. People are moving here because Europe is plundering elsewhere and on top of this funding (proxy-) wars, violence and or bombing other countries through imperial and neo-colonial policies. This series provides a platform untangling these colonial border policies, the transgression of human rights of migrants and refugees and how we can make a difference as social movements in making a world without borders.
