Yes, it’s not a Fifth Friday but as we are about to start a major transformation after the summer break, we decided that we need to do one more special “storytelling” session in our present form under the theme FRIENDS as a thank-you to all our community and team members.

About Fifth Friday Sisterhood

When we started 12 years ago it was as a reaction to a slow steady revival of the ancient art of “Storytelling” which was finally becoming popular again. Even though the craft of the oral tradition was still very much alive in indigenous cultures all over the world, as ever, Western cultures needed to re-appropriate this traditional art form to fit it’s imperialistic/capitalistic ideals for commercial purposes.

It took us a couple of years to find a form that was closer to the actual craft but the venues that tried to give us shelter also needed to pay the rent so they were quite commercial and that made the spaces themselves not completely “safe” for our Advocacy Storytellers.

However, with the help of Friends, we moved a couple of times and as we did so, more and more like-minded people began to join us in our search for safe space to share meaningful tales of life and living in the 21st century and finally we found a safe haven in the Pakhuis de Zwijger.

Our stories are knowledge-based, some funny, some sad, some frightening or moving or even verging on the strange and ridiculous, but most importantly, mostly true and insightful and necessary to share in person.

As a no-money, run-by-volunteers, little group, made up of the invisible, vulnerable and forgotten, we have been able to steadily grow, train, share and impart skills and tools to hundreds like ourselves even though we are almost non-existent online and our events are never regular or shouted out across publicity platforms, we are still here and going strong because we have FRIENDS that believe in us.

So come and join us to explore this fascinating trait called friendship which almost every human is born with. From tiny children to the old and elderly, we all seem to have an inbuilt instinct to seek out none-related others and build bonds of care, love, concern and connection.

Do remember, the FFS is open to all and everyone so please be mindful when you enter our space. If you would like to tell us your own story of friendship, please email us to join the lineup by sending us an email to: [email protected]
