Join us for the first-ever screening of the film The Encampments (2025) in Amsterdam — a powerful documentary capturing the raw, unfiltered reality of the student movement for Palestine in the United States. Told through the eyes of students themselves, the film exposes the courage, consequences, and crackdowns faced by young people standing up against genocide and apartheid — from police violence to arrests, suspensions, and even deportations. Following the screening, we will host a conversation with students active in the Netherlands, reflecting on the growing campus solidarity movement here. What lessons can we take from across the ocean? How do we build stronger, united movements for justice?

A night of film, reflection, and resistance — not to be missed. Come witness the frontlines of student-led liberation.

About the speakers

Chris de Ploeg is a grassroots organizer, journalist and author of De Grote Koloniale Oorlog. He was involved with the University of Color in 2015-2016, a student organisation for decolonisation within the University of Amsterdam. In 2023-2024 he returned as programme maker for Decolonial Dialogues, where he invested in the decolonisation of the University of Amsterdam. Now, Chris started as policy officer for the anti-colonial socialist party De Vonk.

Sam van der Beek is an Anthropology student at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), and also a member of Organized students for Radical Climate Action (ORCA), a student organization currently focused on ending the UvA’s complicity in the genocide of Palestinians. Having lived in Jordan as a child, Sam has been Palestine multiple times. Here, he witnessed the injustice and violence inflicted upon Palestinians with his own eyes. By speaking at this program, Sam wishes for Dutch people to finally realize that the prosperity many of them enjoy is largely made possible by the exploitation of communities elsewhere, such as the Palestinian people. Without acknowledging this reality, the Netherlands will never be able to decolonize.

Programme seriesJustice for Palestine

The Justice for Palestine series will focus upon the broader historic- and present-day context of colonisation, apartheid and military occupation that preceded the horrific October 7th attacks and the relentless bombardments of the Gaza strip that followed. By starting these dialogues, we aim to focus on envisioning sustainable solutions for justice, equality and peace in Historic Palestine for all people who are living there.
