Pakhuis de Zwijger invites you to join the Positive Tourism Festival on October 7th and 8th! For two days, city residents, entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers, students and any other curious beings take up the question of the future of Amsterdam’s visitor economy. Together, we explore ideas, struggles, practices and tools to imagine what a welcoming, liveable and joyful tourism future could look like. Below, you’ll find a short overview of some of the interactive sessions in the daytime programme on Wednesday, October 7th. Dive in to discover what you can expect during the first day of this festival.
The first day of the Positive Tourism Festival combines inspiration, discussion and exchange in an interactive and sparkling way. We start the day with an opening presentation by Anouschka Trauschke and Elena Simons, who will give us a glimpse into the main themes of the festival and introduce us to the various pioneers who are already working with new and bottom-up approaches to tourism. After this introduction, participants are invited to join sessions divided into two rounds. In these sessions, we will explore topics such as accessible tourism, TikTok and other platforms, doing responsible business, and our emotional connection to places. Exhibitions and creative workshops are set up to broaden your horizons, show how tourism has the potential to enrich cities and communities, and encourage reflection on our own ethos as hosts as well as guests. Finally, the festival includes a small fair where participants can meet a diverse group of organisations and initiatives working towards a more positive visitor economy.

Hoe maken we betere keuzes over toerisme?
In deze sessie staat de vraag centraal welke kennis we nodig hebben om de impact van toerisme beter te begrijpen en keuzes te maken die bijdragen aan een leefbare stad. In deze interactieve sessie verkennen we welke vragen we moeten beantwoorden en welke kennis nog ontbreekt. Denk, deel en bouw mee aan een kennisagenda voor positief toerisme.

De toerist als Amsterdammer, de Amsterdammer als toerist (NL) – Buurthotel & Amsterdam Gastvrij
In deze interactieve sessie wordt aan de hand van quizvragen verkend wat een toerist is en wat we als bewoners van Amsterdam van bezoekers verwachten. Daarnaast vragen we ook hoe wij zelf als toerist bewegen. Hoe gastvrij zijn we eigenlijk? Wat verwachten we als we zelf op vakantie zijn? Verwacht een luchtige en vrolijke brainstormsessie, waarbij we tegelijkertijd open staan om met onze eigen (voor-)oordelen over de toerist geconfronteerd te worden.
Specifiek voor: Amsterdamse bewoners, in het bijzonder bewoners die zich actief met het onderwerp toerisme in de stad bezighouden.

Tourism frontrunners: put your business to the test
Design Tours with Play-Doh: Accessible Tourism in Amsterdam (ENG) – InHolland
In this workshop, we use the book All Aboard by Veroniek Maat as a starting point to reflect on the “real lived experiences” of visitors and residents with disabilities. Subsequently, the participants will work on two assignments. First, using Play-Doh, they are invited to design a street in Amsterdam as it might be experienced as part of a tour. Each participant takes on a different role (for example, a local resident, a visitor with a disability, a fellow traveller without a disability, or another stakeholder). Then, the participants receive a specific assignment that will only be revealed at the start of the workshop.
Alongside designing the physical environment, we will use a number of questions to explore the story being told during the tour, allowing us to look beyond physical accessibility alone. Through this exercise, participants experience how different perspectives, needs, and interests come together, and sometimes clash in public space.

Inclusive and Accessible Tourism: why and how to? (ENG) – Badass Tours
In this workshop, participants are going to explore why it matters that everyone is included in messaging, offerings, and facilities of the tourism industry. Women, tourists of colour, LGBTQIA+ tourists, neurodivergent tourists, and tourists with disabilities all face a diversity of challenges visiting Amsterdam. For example, some are underrepresented, while others face accessibility barriers. Badass Tours has spent years working on these issues and together with you will review the benefits and challenges of addressing these groups

Session 6:TikTok en andere platformen (NL)
Tijdens deze sessie neemt Prof. dr. Justus Uitermark deelnemers mee in de wereld van social media. Bezoekers baseren hun keuzes in toenemende mate op social media en taalmodellen (AI). Justus Uitermark onderzoekt de invloed daarvan. Tijdens deze workshop presenteert hij in een notendop de verschillende effecten per platform. Daarna gaan de deelnemers samen brainstormen over manieren om deze digitale platforms te benutten voor gewenste keuzes en gedrag van bezoekers.

Ontmoet me in het Hart van Noord: de nieuwe stadskern in ontwikkeling (NL/ENG) – Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab Amsterdam
In deze workshop zien de deelnemers hoe we concreet aan de slag gaan met het ontwikkelen van positief toerisme in Amsterdam-Noord, stadskerngebied Buikslotermeerplein. Dit is een buurt die in opkomst is en een transformatie ondergaat op vele lagen. Voor sommige stakeholders gaat die transformatie te snel of juist te langzaam; de vraag is: hoe daarin te navigeren? Het Urban Leisure & Tourism Lab deelt hun werkmethodes en uitkomsten. Eén van de belangrijkste uitgangspunten is dat we fysiek en sociaal ingebed zijn in de omgeving van het Buikslotermeerplein en vanuit de voormalige Blokker bouwen aan onderling vertrouwen, veiligheid, netwerkvorming en innovatie
Samen met bewoners, activisten, kunstenaars, beleidsmakers, (sociaal) ondernemers, studenten en bezoekers werken ze aan het initiëren en aanjagen van diverse vormen van regeneratieve gebiedsontwikkeling en positief toerisme. Kom kijken, lezen en luisteren naar verschillende concepten die zijn ontwikkeld in de loop van de jaren. Verwacht presentaties, video’s, maquettes, modellen en publicaties.

Met ‘Badass Tours’ vertelt ze de verhalen van Amsterdamse queers, joden en andere historische buitenbeentjes. ‘Mensen worden vaak geëmotioneerd, doordat ze zich gerepresenteerd voelen.’
