To some, night culture stands for pure escapism and hedonistic joy. However, night culture is inherently political, with political realities shaping both the need for nightlife and its very power. Historically, nightlife has been both a breeding ground for social movements and a popular target of far-right political powers. Nowadays, we see similar trends developing. In this event, we explore the political meaning of night culture, how it’s affected by politics, and its revolutionary potential beyond nighttime.

Programme seriesTalk of the Night

Talk of the Night is a series where we start the conversation with Amsterdam on its night culture. What do citizens of Amsterdam think of our city’s nightlife? What is needed to create a more diverse, inclusive and vibrant night for all? Talk of the Night is a series organized by representatives of night citizens and night makers in the Amsterdam Night Council (ANC) in collaboration with Pakhuis de Zwijger. The ANC, including the night mayor of Amsterdam, represents the city’s night culture in conversations with the municipality of Amsterdam. In this series, we invite all clubbers, night makers and other citizens to join in and share their thoughts, wishes and worries on night culture in Amsterdam. All input will be shared with the city’s administration. Together, we work towards a meaningful night culture for generations to come.
