From October 6 until October 8, Amsterdam will celebrate the bicycle and its unique culture with films, art, talks and drinks during the Bicycle Film Festival Amsterdam. The festival shows you a wide range of films, all telling a different story about the bicycle in the broadest sense of the word. During this special screening at Pakhuis de Zwijger and afterward discussion we will hear different stories of women from all over the world, in whose daily lives cycling plays a significant role.

Women on Wheels

“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling,” said Susan B. Anthony, a famous 19th century American civil rights leader. “I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance.”

In Amsterdam the bike has become its trademark; for many women it is absolutely normal to ride solo, with their children, together with friends, to their work or race for fun. Tonight we will hear from women from all over the world: racers, BMX riders, frame builders, and women who teach other women ‘how to ride’. The screening of the films (see full list below) is followed by a panel discussion with:

About the Bicycle Film Festival

The Bicycle Film festival finds its roots in New York. Brendt Barbur started the festival in 2001 after he was hit by a bus while riding his bike in New York City. He insisted on turning his negative experience into a positive one and, 15 years on, the festival has been a major catalyst for the rise of city cycling internationally.

From October 6 until October 8, Amsterdam will celebrate the bicycle and its unique culture with films, art, talks and drinks during the Bicycle Film Festival Amsterdam. The festival shows you a wide range of films, all telling a different story about the bicycle in the broadest sense of the word. From SciFi to anime to gangster movies, from music videos to television ads, from Saudi Arabia to the Arctic Circle, the range of themes is broad, deep, delightful and surprising.
