The Fifth Friday Sisterhood are doing a 'storytelling' preamble before the screening of the documentary film 'Freedom of the Wolf'. This film focuses on democratic nations across the globe, facing the rise of a new wave of activist and anti-establishment groups, such as the Occupy Movement. The word 'democracy' tends to represent the ideals between citizen and state, and the film questions what that means today in the 21st century on an epic scale. Join us for an evening filled with stories from activists, poets, spoken word artists, musicians and storytellers, who are the 'other' citizens of Amsterdam!

Democracy for who?
Democracy supposedly gives Citizens equal rights. But the role of the poor and homeless, the youth, women, LBGTQ, students, immigrants, refugees, and a whole list of minority groups in many such societies, is usually undermined and undervalued. Their needs are often ignored and mostly not addressed seriously. Does this mean that Democracy is just flawed, or broken, or a bad system? Or it it worth changing or fixing? Come and hear tales about the challenges, successes, hopes and betrayals, from the activists, poets, spoken word artists, musicians and storytellers, who are the “Other” Citizens of Amsterdam City!

Before the film screening, the Fifth Friday Sisterhood Storytellers, will explore the local aspects of what it’s like to be a “Citizen” of The Netherlands and the City of Amsterdam today, with stories from those whose “Citizenship” is not quite the same as that of the “Majority”! Under the title :The “Other” Democracy”: come hear tales from those who take on the laws of our Democracy, and hear about their struggles, strifes and stands against austerity, to become a Citizen and not: an immigrant or refugee, or to fall in love but not have the legal right to be with loved ones, or simply wish to exercise the freedom of speech and question the role of National or Local Authority and Institutions.
