What does it mean to be African/Black in 2019? Join us in a vernissage and live podcast dialogue with various experts on Africanity/Blackness in conversation with contemporary African photographers as we address the most recent spate of violence, upheaval and misrepresentation of Africans in the global media. How do Africans across the diaspora take control or their image in the world?
How do we speak of Africa/Blackness and the African Diaspora in a new language? How do Africans tell their own visual story about who they are, how they experience the world and, most essentially, how can they express the fact that Africanity/Blackness is not monolithic? MAKER is proud to present the debut European exhibit of photographer Dana Scruggs. Dana has most recently become the first African American woman to shoot for the ESPN Body issue as well as the first African American and the first African American woman to shoot the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in the fifty-one year history of the magazine.
