A free and diverse press is essential for an open and free society. But all over the world free press is now under siege. Political regimes try to silence media. Commercial algorithms decide on our news supply. The old business model of journalism seem to be broken and established media have trouble to deal with new world views. Time for a fresh view and technologies like Blockchain that can support press freedom and democracy. How does blockchain technically work and what are the opportunities and possible challenges of the system?

With press freedom and open media coverage under pressure, it time to discuss new technologies for the future. Let’s start with the potential of blockchain technology and the beneficial features for the field of journalism. Together with Lars Broering (World Press Photo), Leon Willems (Free Press Unlimited) and Teun Gautier (Publeaks), we will address the state free press and the possibilities of blockchain to increase press freedom. What are the most important technological advantages? How do we apply them to the field of contemporary journalism? What shining examples already exist and how will blockchain change the future?

What is Blockchain?

In simple terms, a blockchain is a digital, publicly accessible ledger or register. All transactions involving bitcoin are saved in the register, and anyone with the access codes can verify ownership of the virtual currency at any time. Blockchain’s revolutionary character lies in the fact that it is a decentralised system, meaning it operates independently of a central authority, such as a central bank. This ensures faster and cheaper transactions, and a trustworthy central party is no longer necessary.
