What is the potential of designing spatial interfaces which are manifested to us in the form of virtual and hybrid immersive spatial experiences and what are the challenges towards geo-located databases and/or narratives in a hybridised urban environment, experienced via mobile or wearable displays?
Our being and acting in the world is currently being mediated by computing technologies, which may enhance our experience of the physical environment with information and content appropriately mapped onto the environmental stimuli we perceive.
More specifically, the convergence of mobile communication, wireless networks, pervasive media and location-based systems may afford hybrid spatial experiences for the urban dweller. Alternatively, virtual, augmented or mixed reality systems may immerse us in immaterial representations of environments, affording rich and engaging audiovisual spatial experiences, through the use of head mounted displays or large-scale projection systems. Additionally, these systems and the experiences they afford may be either personal or social (multi-user). One of the significant factors which limits the expansion of such spatial interfaces to a wider public has so far been the relative lack of understanding the nature of these enhanced environmental experiences and of the impact that they may have on their users.
Dimitris Charitos is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens where he teaches the subjects of human-machine communication, interactive design, digital art and visual communication and holds a PhD in interactive and virtual environments design.
Iouliani Theona is an architect and research associate at the University of Athens. Her research interests include pervasive games, locative media and hybrid spatial experiences. Together they are the organizers of the Hybrid City Conferences Series. The 3rd edition of the Hybrid City Conference will take place September 17-19 2015 in Athens.
Dimitris and Iouliani will be visiting Amsterdam this week. If you would like to listen to their talks and share your ideas with us, you’re are welcome to join! Just hit the yellow ‘Reserveer’ button to RSVP.
