Starting in Ferguson, Missouri, the documentary Do Not Resist follows a South Carolina SWAT team both in action and in training. The film places the viewer firmly at the centre of the action and shows how the police work when out in the field. Do Not Resist gives valuable insight into issues such as search warrants, the militarization of American forces, advanced technological tools, police seminars and how surveillance technology once reserved for government security has now been adapted for police use.
With an introduction by:
Filmmaker Craig Atkinson grew up with a father in the police force, and the environment presented in the film is a familiar one to him. In Do Not Resist, he explores the world of the police, presents it to the viewer and addresses the militarization of the police force in the USA. An issue that raises complex moral questions.
As a professor of Forensic Business Studies at Nyenrode and professor Police Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Bob Hoogenboom knows all about police forces and the use of new technologies. In his monthly column in the NRC he discusses issues such as the influence of body cams on our society. He will join us and give an introduction to the documentary. Is this situation also applicable to the Netherlands? What tools are currently used by the police and what technological changes do we face in the future?
