Maarten van Ginkel

Researcher in international agriculture, focused on developing countries

I retired in 2017, after almost 40 years in international agricultural research, living in 8 different countries. 30 years were spent with two international agricultural research centers (CIMMYT and ICARDA). I headed the Bread Wheat Breeding Program at CIMMYT and their Wheat Genebank, and was Deputy Director General - Research at ICARDA. Professionally I am a plant breeder, geneticist and pathologist. I bred almost a hundred bread wheat varieties grown in more than 20 countries providing food for more than 100 million people, have published more than 250 scientific publications, and trained more than 1000 young plant scientists, mostly from the developing world. My interests are broad.
