Program Maker Urban Development & Social Innovation

At Pakhuis de Zwijger I focus on the relationship between urban development and social innovation. How do new developments in the city take shape in co-creation with a variety of stakeholders? What are the implications for governance if traditional roles are in transition? And what does this mean for new mechanisms of ownership and finance of civic initiatives? For the past years I have been working on how collaborative city-making leads to more liveable, sustainable and equitable cities worldwide. I connected this approach to the Urban Agenda for the EU and the UN-Habitat New Urban Agenda, by building a network of City Makers in the 28 EU capital cities and several cities around the globe. I developed the platform New Europe - Cities in Transition ( and organized 14 field trips and local conferences around Europe, and a series of events for the Habitat III conference in Quito (Ecuador). I'm co-founder of the re:Kreators association (, a network of cooperative area developers in European cities, and co-organized the second global Placemaking Week ( in October 2017. In-house I run the series Area Development (Gebiedsontwikkeling), Urban Movies, New Urban Agenda, China Creates, Future Cities, and occasionally Talk of the Town. I moderate the Learning Network New City-Making, a project to exchange know-how and build capacity with city officials and city makers in times of transition.
