The Placemaking Week took place in and around Amsterdam from 10-14 October 2017. Project for public spaces defines placemaking as ‘a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value. It facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution’.

It was a week of learning all about placemaking and networking with other placemakers around the world. What happened and how did participants experience this week?

Placemakers came from all over the world:

Day 1: Placegames in Amsterdam

A collaboration with local stakeholders who showed their insights into several public spaces around Amsterdam. By means of placegames, participants helped to evaluate these public spaces.

Day 2: The Dutch city expeditions

There were several city expeditions planned throughout the Netherlands; in Haarlem, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Zwolle, Den Haag, Almere, Tilburg, Delft and Dordrecht. Participants learned about placemaking successes and challenges.

Here are some impressions of placemaking in these participating cities:

Day 3 and 4: Learning about placemaking at Pakhuis de Zwijger

These two days were the core of the conference. Presentations and workshops occupied every corner of the building. Participants got inspired:

Day 4: Tours around Amsterdam

The program ended with some fun tours and activities around Amsterdam, among which a market safari tour by boat and foot:

A big thank you goes to all participants for making this a very inspiring week!
